A new little bundle of joy has been born at the Knowsley Safari Park, no, it wasn’t a human baby; it was a white rhino, only a couple of years after the rhino Nola passed away! The rhino’s mother Meru who is 21, keeps a watchful eye on the little baby and already it can run around its pen!
She was not a very little baby, actually, she weighed a whopping 44.5kg – she is the latest of this rare species and she is owned by Lord and Lady Derby,
“It is almost as exciting as having one of my own.” Said Lady Derby.
It is devastating that white rhinos are one of the world’s most hunted animals – there are only an estimated 20,000 left in the wild. In 2014, more than 1,200 were killed by hunters for their horns, which are used in Chinese medicine, and which are more valuable on the black market than diamonds!
Knowsley Safari Park helps to fund the work of a Rhino Trust in Zimbabwe, with £30,000 raised so far in sponsorship from the Derby family, visitor donations and fundraising activities. Meanwhile, the estate’s new arrival still has lots of growing up to do. Eventually, she will have two horns, will weigh two tons, and will reach up to 16ft in length.
