Why do people always assume the Asian is the nanny?
The recent viral video of professor Robert Kelly being interrupted by his two small children.
He managed to keep his cool as one and then two small children came charging into the room. The video has been viewed millions of times and many people happy but there has been some controversy over prof Roberts wife Ms Kim as a majority of people on social media including some media outlets.
They assumed that Ms Kim an Asian women was the nanny this had people this had people furious as it was later revealed Ms Kim was his wife just trying to control his kids. Twitter exploded with people calling people racist for assuming she was the nanny. Many hashtags were used including #stopbeingracist.
Another person wrote:
“LOVED that BBC video. But do NOT assume an Asian woman with a white man is the nanny. Such subtle racism.”
Not everybody thinks this is fair. As the look of panic of Ms Kim face may see that she is worried for her job. Others said that she acted in a way any mother would and ushered out her children in a hurriedly way as she did not want her husband to be disturbed. The professor was speaking about North and South Korea when his children barged in this has also added to people’s assumptions. Robert Kelly said it was his mistake and it had made him and his family YouTube stars.
At the the start, he was worried and embarrassed about it put later took it on the chin and made a joke out of it. He is just hoping people still read his work after the incident. He has been known as a BBC dad for a while now and expressed his love for his children. He also quashed all rumours of him not wearing pants.
When was asked if they fought over the incident he said no, nor did he punish his children for it. He was just mortified that maybe he won’t get called to speak on any TV networks again.
His children are 9 month old James and their 4 year old daughter. The video reached 86 million views as of Wednesday and it is still gaining. He said that is is grateful for his well wishes as they are just a regular family and that their young children can be a lot if work.
What sort of assumptions do people have about Asian women?
There has been great prejudice over mixed race couples as nobody assumes that someone from one race is going out with another this can be seen as subtle racism to most even if it’s not meant in that way. Jonathan Smith and his partner Tiffany Wong said they had experienced a lot of discrimination from complete strangers when they started dating as everyone just assumed that people date people from the same ethnic group.
Another Chinese student said that everyone assumed that she was studying to become a doctor or nurse. She said it affected her the way people acted around her.
