First baby born in 12 years on Fernando de Noronha

The remote Brazilian Island has a ban on childbirth so expecting families are requested to travel to mainland to give birth to their child.

Fernando de Noronha ( 370km or 230 miles) from the city of Natal, has no maternity wards despite having a population of nearly 3.000 in 2015.

An unnamed woman,22, was the first person to break this rule in 12 years when she gave birth to her baby girl on the island, not even realising she was pregnant until she was giving birth.

Sea turtles, dolphins, whales and rare birds are frequently observed there so due to its vulnerability, strict population controls are in place.

To celebrate the rare occasion, local residents helped the family by donating clothes for the girl.

On the O Globe website, the woman said

“On Friday night I had pains and when I went to the bathroom I saw something coming down between my legs,”

“That’s when the child’s father came and picked it up. It was a baby, a girl. I was dumbstruck.”
