Accomplished Producer Visits St. Ambrose

Georgina Kiedrowski, a local camera operator and TV producer, came to St. Ambrose to talk to the BBC School Report Team.

A relative of one of our reporters, Ben, she was a survivor of The Island – an entertainment survival show where a group of males and females stayed on a desolate island where they fought to tolerate the wilderness for a period of 6 weeks…

Georgina

George, as she prefers to be called, first started in the producing industry 16 years ago, with a passion for filming and was fascinated iprofessional story-telling since she was 7 years old, whilst watching Top of the Pops! She began training as a camera operator; throughout her career, she has worked in News and Factual and Entertainment Documentaries. She was then offered an opportunity of a lifetime and recruited to be part of the embedded camera crew as she had to participate in the programme too.

Upon her arrival, George was welcomed by the leaders of broadcasting club, Mr Lewis and Miss Haselden. After that, she answered some questions that we had prepared for her beforehand. When asked, “Did your experience on The Island help you become better at your job in any way?” she answered that she could look at her work at a different perspective and she spends more time with the people that she works with to bond.

We also asked: “Psychologically, what was the biggest challenge that you had to endure?” She replied saying that at some points, she wanted to leave and thought that she wasn’t fulfilling her job and she was on the verge of insanity after 6 weeks on The Island. However, she managed to cope by remembering that her suffering was going to end, unlike that of those she has filmed living in extreme poverty.

Another question asked was: “You produce a lot of shows with emergencies in, what’s the horrifying sight?” Georgina said that there were many tragic scenes that she has had to film but she tries to forget that they are in painful situations, and switches to thinking that they are being helped and they’ll be on their road to recovery with their family and friends soon.

Here is an Audio Interview of more of what we said,

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed her visit here and we wish her the best as she flies to Jordan for her next show, about the refugee camps. Thank you for all the advice and tips, George!

2016 Tech Promises

Throughout the last year there have been amazing accomplishments in the world of technology and most of us want to know what to expect in the tech world during 2016.

We are going to count down the top 8 expected things to be released in 2016. (This list is in no particular order)

8) Oculus Rift and Touch

Through the past year there have been great boosts in Virtual Reality (VR) however this year we have been promised with the Oculus Rift and Touch which allows a better gaming experience making you feel more inside the game. This VR system is owned by Facebook and needs a PC to connect. It can also be connected to with an Xbox controller. Sensitivity controllers will be released later to this and the product is said to be released in the first quarter of the year.

7) HTC Vive

This is another VR related item. It is an Oculus Rift type headset and was meant to be sold in 2015 but is delayed until April 2016.

6) Sony PlayStation VR

Yet another VR item. Sony have entered the competition with the other VR systems. This console is also known as project Morpheus and this item is promised to be released in the first half of the year.

5) Microsoft HoloLens

This item is more of a virtual display unit as appose to another VR console system. It is used to display images in the user’s vision of sight and will be used for more work type uses. It is promised to be released in early 2016 for 3000$ (Approx. £2121.81)

4) IPhone 7 and 7+

Apple may be swapping the mechanical home button for a touch-sensitive home button and removing the headphone jack altogether.  This is the closest guess to what the IPhone 7 will have to offer however we do know that it will be released in September.

3) Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge

This is a raw piece of data but we do know that whatever it has to offer will be amazing.

2) iWatch 2

It is said to have face time calls and integrated camera. It is said to be released in March.

1) Nintendo NX

The NX is a mobile/console hybrid that has a touchscreen controller. This is probably going to be released at the E3 show in June.

The Enterprise: boldly brewing coffee for a bustling community

Grindsmith Coffee, a relatively local company based on Deansgate, hosted a coffee morning yesterday at the café in the Sixth Form.

Arguably one of the best independent coffee houses in the city, Grindsmith have a much more unique selling point than most other coffee businesses can boast: it’s served off a trike. The black trike which holds a coffee machine, a mini fridge and several other indispensable components gives Grindsmith a very vintage feel albeit the drinks are very modern.

The morning saw the trial opening of the coffee shop in the college which proved highly successful, with staff showing their delight at the luxurious coffee, complete with a rich aroma, silky steamed milk and espresso with subtle caramel tones. The menu includes several different specialities of coffee such as Cappuccinos and Flat Whites, in addition to Hot Chocolate and Tea.

Furthermore, residents of the local community were invited to the Sixth Form to socialise and chat with the staff, enjoy the selection of sweet pastries available at no cost whatsoever and simply unwind in a relaxed environment. Yesterday evening was also parents evening for the Year 9 students, and so the business venture was open and serving drinks to thirsty parents.

The school are currently negotiating a possible permanent coffee business in the Sixth Form which would be open for the local community during the school week too. Grindsmith are also in negotiations with St Ambrose Barlow with regards to apprenticeships for Sixth Form students.
