Social Influencers

Being a Social Influencer is a big deal.

For example, Selena Gomez.

Selena Gomez is a global superstar. She is the most followed person on Instagram (133 million and counting.) Her Social platform is a great way to spread awareness about certain topics towards millions of people, which is exactly what she does.

DACA, aka ‘Dreamers’, has been a big issue recently and Selena posted about it supporting it.  She also wore a ‘we are all dreamers’ shirt while behind the scenes.

She has lupus. So, to raise awareness about the disease she donated a lot of money to research. They have raised around $500,000 ever since Selena spoke about it and proceeds from her very high grossing tour went to lupus research.

She and her mother, Mandy, produced a very big TV programme called ‘13 reasons why’ which creates awareness about suicide, which has been a very big problem recently.

She has supported charities like the ‘Step up foundation’ which is about empowerment and fulfilling ones potential. The ‘We movement’ which is where the younger generation (around 16,000 people) come together to talk about social issues and making a better world. They have a ‘we day’ every year and Selena has hosted it 4 times and she has been supporting this movement for a while.

Unicef (The United Nations Children Fund) is quite a large and global charity.  Selena has been a UNICEF ambassador since 2009 and is the youngest ambassador there has ever been.  She has been to places like Nepal, which is a LIC (low income country) and has given money and supported the cause to help the most unfortunate of people.

Recently, there has been a lot of cases to do with sexual assault. There has been a very well known movement called ‘Time’s Up’ which is to create awareness and fight against sexual assault. Selena was one of the first to post about it on Instagram to spread the message and she anonymously donated $1 Million to the movement which is the biggest amount a celebrity has donated.

Here are a few more charities, which she has supported:

  • 10×10
  • Alliance for Children’s Rights
  • Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
  • Make a Wish Foundation
  • Stand Up To Cancer
  • Malala Fund
  • The Salvation Army
  • Teen Cancer America
  • Free the Children
  • ENOUGH Project
  • ALS Association

There are about 15+ charities/foundations that she has worked with.

We need more social influencers to create awareness about these types of topic to a wide audience and make a difference to improve our world and to get more people involved.

We need more people like Selena.

Samsung Galaxy S8

There is a large battle in the tech world especially between the two tech giants of the phone world: Apple and Samsung. Despite the conflicts between both Apple and Samsung users, no one can doubt that everyone is excited for the brand new Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ due to be released on March 29th in Barcelona.

The phone will be released on March 29th 2017 in Barcelona, where it will be available for sale and will gradually make its way to the shops globally and will be released in the Uk on April 21st 2017.

The new phone will be battery tested in a more thorough procedure to prevent incidents similar to the galaxy note 7 fiasco of 2016. Also more battery space has been added as an experimental way of preventing the phone to explode.

As well as in built fire/ explosion prevention systems, the S8 has leaked features which are still yet to be verified however have a good possibility to be included.

The first and probably most exciting feature of them all is the new iris scanner and facial recognition system. The system theoretically should be similar to that that is seen in films which makes the phone even more futuristic. This system (along with fingerprint) will be used as a lock system for even more privacy and protection of identification.

The other concept features will be reviewed in less detail as they are less exciting:
2. Narrower bezel and much bigger, dual curved display.
3. Ultra HD 4K resolution.
4. A revamped virtual or rear home button.
5. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor (most likely for the Uk)
6. Dual rear cameras.
7. USB-C port.

As well as all of these amazing feature the Samsung Galaxy S8 comes in a variety of colours and ultimately should be a massive step in technology and a massive improvement to previous phones to be marvelled at.

On Planet Nine

space

Astronomers at The California Institute of Technology (CALTECH) claim to have evidence that, in our Solar System, there is a ninth planet orbiting the sun, even further away than Pluto.

It is thought to be a Super Earth, meaning that it is the between the sizes of Earth and Neptune, a category that many planets outside our Solar System fall into. Their calculations reveal that Planet X orbits 20 times farther from the sun than Neptune (the current outermost planet); this means that it should take around 15,000 years to complete one full circle around our star.

The team have yet to find physical evidence of the new planet but if true, it will have 10 times the mass of Earth. With their theories being published worldwide, the CALTECH scientists are sure that people will begin to search for Planet Nine and therefore help with their research.

Dr Brown, one of the astronomers said:

“The most distant objects all swing out in one direction in a very strange way that shouldn’t happen, and we realised the only way we could get them to swing in one direction is if there is a massive planet, also very distant in the Solar System, keeping them in place while they all go around the Sun,”

Many other well-known scientists agree with the team’s findings, saying that the layout of the Solar System and the planet’s sizes suggests that a planet, around the size of Earth and Mars, could be a possibility.

However, NASA’s chief scientist, Dr Ellen Stofan says that she needs physical, telescopic evidence before she believes CALTECH.  She does agree that the evidence and research gathered does imply that there’s an undiscovered planet.

So what do you think? Is there another planet? Or are the CALTECH astronomers on cloud nine for nothing?

Yahoo accounts hacked

Yahoo said on Wednesday that it had discovered another major cyber-attack.

They said that data from more than 1 billion user’s accounts was compromised.

“Don’t panic,” security expert Graham Cluley told the BBC, although he does add that there are plenty of reasons to be concerned.

The problem is that they have only just found out that this happened and it happened in August in 2013. 3 years ago!

Yahoo has also said it is investigating a more recent, separate issue that might have made some accounts accessible without passwords.

This means that there is another problem that Yahoo isn’t telling everyone that could have something to do with the hacking of the accounts. Another problem is that they have only just told people about the hack now so if they would have said about this in 2013 this might have been sorted but it’s a been 3 years so loads of more information has been compromised. The hacker(s) could have got used to the system and found out more ways to access the private information.

“Your email account is the central hub of your entire online existence – if they own that they can ask for password resets on other accounts you have online as well,” explains Mr Cluley. This isn’t very reassuring for people, this just makes them more worried.

Yahoo own many accounts but Yahoo has said, though, that accounts for Tumblr – which it also owns – would not have been affected.

The Reality of Internet Dating

The Reality of ‘Hook Up’ apps:

In 2013 the reported crimes (in England and Wales) of any dating apps were 55; according to the Freedom of Information Act. The number spiked to 204 in 2014, only to jump again to 412 in 2015. The amount of people who use dating apps is rising every day and with that rises the risk. The most common reports that police get are violent or sexual crimes, which includes grooming, rapes, and the sexual exploitation of children.

The dangers of using apps like Tinder are horrific, as Angela Jay learnt. Angela was savagely attacked by a man she met on Tinder, he stabbed and doused in petrol. Allegedly, he had gone to her home before and waited her for her to arrive from work before his attack. The 28 year old doctor was attacked as she ended their brief relationship, which Paul Lambert (the attacker) was not happy about. He blew up her phone with threatening and abusive messages, such as “You’re are not safe in that house… I have some of the house keys.” Angela actually had a restraining order on the man, yet that meant nothing to him. After she was stabbed repeatedly, she dragged her body to the neighbour’s house.  He tried to flee but was caught on the highway. The strangest thing is that it was most out of character for Lambert, which comes to show how the internet shows a different side to people, one you would never imagine.

This is only one of the many stories that show a different side to dating apps. All you see are the ‘success stories’ of how someone found their ‘soul mate’ on Tinder, yet the reality of it all may be harder to grasp, as it is much, much worse.

Are we living in an alternate universe?

We could be living in another universe

Do you happen to know the song ‘We are the Champions’ by Queen? If so, just sing the end line of the song.

Did you happen to sing, ‘We are the champions of the world’? Well, that’s not how the song ends. This is one example of the Mandela Effect.

The Mandela effect was discovered by Fionna Broom in 2010. The “Mandela Effect” is what happens when someone has a clear memory of something that never happened in this reality. The Mandela effect is the theory that as well as parallel universes existing we switch between them all the time without realising.

Ask yourself these 3 simple question:

  • What does Darth Vader say to Luke when he reveals he is he father?
  • In Snow White, is the famous line “Mirror mirror on the Wall”?
  • Febreeze or Febreze?

Here are the answers:

  • “Luke, I am your father.”
  • No, it’s “magic mirror on the wall”.
  • Febreze

Did you get them right?

There are many other explanations to suggest there isn’t a Mandela effect and that we are not living in an alternate universe.

For example, humans love repetition and it is psychologically proven to enchant the brain. This can explain why so many people remember the end as ‘We are the champions of the world’.

Another explanation is that certain famous phrases would have been passed down centuries so people might have recited the phrases incorrectly meaning everyone  remembers it a particular way. For example “Mirror mirror on the wall” is the phrase that most people of the past 3 decades use but older people remember it as the original, “Magic mirror on the wall”.

What do you believe? Do you think we’re living in an alternate universe?
